Municipality of Almere
Almere built its first houses in 1975. Almere is now the seventh largest city in the Netherlands with about 211,000 inhabitants. Almere still has great ambitions for the coming years. The city is going to make a quality leap and with the construction of about 60,000 new houses it will develop into a city of about 350,000 inhabitants. This task is unique for the Netherlands.
The challenge is to shape this growth in such a way that this young city in this young area continues to develop as a balanced, versatile and attractive city with attention to greenery, water, facilities, employment and good accessibility. But certainly also by giving substance to the energy transition and giving an impulse to the circular economy.
In the spring of 2019, Almere was appointed the most SME-friendly city in the Netherlands. The Floriade 2022 will also take place in Almere.
